Grooming Tips

Excerpts from an interview with Phyllis Hebrard, experienced exhibitor/groomer

No two people groom alike.

Whatever works for them and their dogs (makes them happy) is all that is necessary.

Here is some information for your consideration.

First:

  • I teach the dogs as puppies to lay on their side, show side (left side) is groomed first
  • we start with the feet
  • work the under side
  • ending with the show side, head and ear fall
  • repeat on non show side (right side)
  • the nails must be clipped
  • the feet trimmed

If you have a wavy coat I recommend ironing to make the coat straight

It is important:
  • that the dogs be groomed every day
  • bathed at least  once a week

Things to remember:

  •  when grooming your dog, it is one on one time and the dogs love the attention.
  •  It is also important that the product used are conducive to your dogs coat, (re texture etc.)

For show dogs:

  • I recommend keeping them in light oil* Nutragenia body oil ( a human product) Formula: 2 Tbls of oil to 4 ounces of coat conditioner to 64 ounces of warm water. This is why it is necessary to bathe them once  a week and of course for show you bathe them out of the oil .
